SOGETSU IKEBANA CERTIFICATION COURSE

Ikebana online classes

Study Ikebana the traditional way and earn your official Sogetsu School Certificate.

The Sogetsu Ikebana certification programme is your path to a deep, structured practice of one of Japan’s most respected floral arts. Whether you dream of teaching one day, or simply want to develop a serious, lasting skill, this course gives you the foundation — level by level, lesson by lesson.

Classes are available online worldwide and in person in Tokyo.

What is the Sogetsu Certification?

Sogetsu Ikebana is one of the three grand schools of Japanese flower arranging, known for its creative freedom within a rigorous classical structure. The official Sogetsu School Certificate is internationally recognised and issued directly by the Sogetsu headquarters in Tokyo.
Studying toward certification means more than learning arrangements.
It means developing an eye, a philosophy, and a practice you carry for life.

Course Structure

The programme is divided into levels. Each level consists of 20 lessons and takes approximately 5–6 months to complete at one lesson per week.

At the end of each level, you are eligible to apply for the official Sogetsu School Certificate for that level (certificate application fee is separate and will be paid directly to the Sogetsu School).

Level 1 — Foundation

Learn the three core Ikebana styles: Moribana (arrangements in shallow containers) and Nageire (arrangements in tall vases). You’ll study proportion, line, and the relationship between plant material and space as well as the basic principles of Sogetsu Ikebana.

Level 2 — Development

Deepen your technique with more complex arrangements, seasonal materials, and greater creative interpretation. You’ll begin to develop your own artistic voice within the Sogetsu framework.

Levels 3 — Expression

Work moves beyond defined forms into more personal, expressive territory. You’ll explore unconventional materials, abstract composition, and arrangements that carry intention and atmosphere. This is where Ikebana begins to feel like a genuine creative language.

Level 4 - Mastery

At this level, technique becomes instinct. You’ll work with large-scale and installation-style arrangements, deepen your understanding of space and seasonality, and refine the artistic sensibility that makes your work distinctly yours.

Level 5 - Path to Becoming a Certified Teacher

Level 5 marks a significant threshold. Completing this level makes you eligible to apply for your official Sogetsu teaching qualification. The credential that authorises you to teach Ikebana under the Sogetsu name.

This is not simply an advanced techniques course. It is a preparation for the responsibility of teaching. Alongside the most demanding arrangements in the curriculum, you’ll develop the eye and the language to guide others in order to see what a student’s work is reaching for, and to help them get there.

For many students, this level is the culmination of years of practice. For others, it opens an entirely new chapter.

Note: Eligibility for Level 5 requires completion of Levels 1 through 4 and the corresponding Sogetsu certificates.

How Classes Work

All certification lessons are taught one-on-one. Every session is yours entirely — the pace, the feedback, and the focus are tailored to where you are in your practice. This is how I ensure the quality of teaching that a serious certification programme deserves.

Online (available worldwide)

Sessions are held via Google Meet or Zoom. You’ll prepare your own fresh materials, container, and tools ahead of each lesson. I guide you through each arrangement in real time, with individual feedback throughout.

In Person (Tokyo only)

Face-to-face sessions are held in Tokyo. Fresh materials are included in the session fee. You’ll bring your own container and tools — or request a Starter Kit (scissors, kenzan, and small containers) when you book.

Session length: 1 to 1.5 hours
Frequency: Once per week

About the Teacher

IMG 0028 e1776508183942

I’m Anna Budich, a Sogetsu-certified Ikebana teacher holding the Sankyu Shihan (Third Level Teacher’s Certificate). I have studied Ikebana since 2012 under Takayama-sensei, one of Tokyo’s most respected Sogetsu masters, and have exhibited internationally and worked on floral design for embassy and corporate events in Japan.

I teach exclusively one-on-one. For me, quality is not possible any other way since Ikebana is a deeply personal practice, and every student brings a different eye, different hands, and a different relationship with the materials. My role is to meet you exactly where you are and help you grow from there.

My teaching brings together the precision of the Sogetsu tradition with a philosophy of presence and attention because Ikebana, at its heart, is as much about how you see as what you create.
