Why Sogetsu Ikebana?

Sogetsu is one of the most open and creative schools of Ikebana. Unlike more rigid traditions, Sogetsu encourages personal expression — meaning your arrangements will always be distinctly yours. It was founded in Tokyo in 1927 and is now practised in over 100 countries worldwide.

As a Sogetsu-certified teacher based in Tokyo, I bring both the technical foundation and the spirit of the practice into every lesson.

FAQs

What is Ikebana?
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Unlike Western floristry, Ikebana is about more than beauty. It is a contemplative practice that works with line, space, and silence as much as with flowers. Sogetsu Ikebana, the school I teach, is one of the most creative and accessible traditions, founded in Tokyo in 1927 and now practised in over 100 countries.

Do I need any experience to join a class?

No experience is needed. All classes, online and in-person, welcome complete beginners. The only requirement is an open mind and a willingness to slow down.

What style of Ikebana do you teach?
All classes are rooted in the Sogetsu school of Ikebana. Sogetsu encourages personal expression and can be practised by anyone, anywhere, using any material. Ideal for students worldwide.

How is Ikebana different from flower arranging?
Western flower arranging tends to focus on fullness, symmetry, and colour. Ikebana works with asymmetry, negative space, and the relationship between stems. It is as much a meditation as it is a craft.

How do the online Ikebana classes work?

All online classes are held live via Zoom or Google Meet. You arrange flowers in your own home while I guide you step by step. Sessions are conducted in English and are open to students worldwide.

What do I need to prepare for an online class?
You’ll need fresh flowers and foliage from your local market or garden, a kenzan (flower frog), floral scissors or shears, and a suitable container. A full materials list is sent after booking so you can prepare with confidence.

Can I join from outside Japan?
Yes. Online classes are designed for international students. Students have joined from Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and beyond. All you need is flowers, a few tools, and a stable internet connection.

Are the online classes live or recorded?
All sessions are taught live so you receive real-time guidance and personal feedback. Written handouts are provided for every lesson so you can revisit the material at your own pace.

What time zones do you teach in?
Classes are scheduled to accommodate different time zones where possible. When you enquire, let me know your location and we’ll find a time that works.

Do you offer in-person Ikebana classes in Tokyo?
Yes. In-person sessions are available in Tokyo for individuals and small groups. These are ideal if you’re living in Tokyo, relocating, or visiting and want an authentic Ikebana experience.

Where are the Tokyo classes held?
Session location details are shared after booking. Classes are held in a calm, private setting suited to focused practice.

Do I need to bring anything to an in-person class?
All materials (flowers, kenzan, containers, and scissors) are provided for in-person sessions unless otherwise arranged. Just bring yourself.

Are in-person classes suitable for tourists or short-term visitors?
Yes. Single-session in-person classes are available for visitors who want a meaningful, hands-on Ikebana experience while in Tokyo. No prior experience needed.

Do you offer private one-to-one classes?
Yes. Private sessions are available both online and in-person in Tokyo. These are ideal if you want a personalised pace, have specific goals, or simply prefer learning individually.

Can you arrange Ikebana classes for groups or corporate teams?
